Etude House Precious Mineral Any Cushion Review
Friday, 8 January 2016 | 0 comments
Hey cutie!

So I'm back a year later with another cushion review.  This time, I'll be talking about Etude House's Precious Mineral Any Cushion.  I had two refills of this, and I'm just finishing my last one so I think I have a good idea of what I want to say in this review.

First, I want to say that the packaging is much bulkier in comparison to my Innisfree Water Glow Cushion.  If I can remember correctly, I've been told that Etude House cushions fit into other brands under Amore Pacfic such as IOPE, Hera, and so on.  Innisfree however, does not, and their sizes are different than other cushions.  If I had to choose, I do prefer the Innisfree compact better because it's a little slimmer and it's flat top allows you to stack it with other products with ease.  Etude House has a curved top which makes it impractical to store sometimes.

Second, let's compare the sponge.  I think the key to a good cushion is not only the formula but also the sponge.  Etude House's sponge is very airy and has a bit of a thickness to it which is ideal for cushions.  Innisfree's sponge is slightly less thick, but both sponge's texture are similar.  For this reason, I'll say Etude House wins this portion.

I got this cushion in the shade W24 Honey Beige which is their darkest shade but I find it is super warm against my skin.  You can clearly see the difference in colour from the picture.  The texture of this cushion is a little thicker than the Innisfree Water Glow.  If you're tried the Precious Mineral BB Cream, it's the same product, just in a cushion form.  For both the BB cream and cushion version, I found it is heavier and a little cakey on my dry skin.  It has never been my favourite formula.

The coverage of the cushion is about a light-medium to buildable medium in my opinion.  It evened out my skin tone and reduced the redness of my cheeks and also brightened my face despite the yellowness of it. There is a slight perfume scent to it but it does not last on the face. I'd say this lasts about 4 hours into the day but anything after that will soon start to fade. The issue I have with this cushion is how cakey it tends to make my face look up close and it sometimes creases in my worry lines (I don't set my cushions with powder).  For this reason, I try to apply a thin layer upon application.

Overall, this is not my favourite cushion although I know a lot of people do enjoy it.  I much prefer my Innisfree Water Glow but this is a "slightly" (not by much) cheaper alternative.  If you have oily to combination skin, maybe this will work out much better for you.

Innisfree Water Glow Cushion Review
Thursday, 15 January 2015 | 0 comments
Hey cuties,

I'm super excited to be doing this review right now! A little back story: my friend introduced me to her IOPE/Amore Pacific (I can't remember which one she has) cushion and raved about how cushion foundations are really great and handy.  I've heard about them from Youtube and Korean beauty blogs but never really paid too much attention to them until now.  This is my first cushion foundation and I wasn't too sure how I'd like it so I went with a cheaper alternative to the higher end Hera/IOPE/Amore Pacific route and got Innisfree!

This is also my first Innisfree product and spoiler alert: I'm impressed!
I believe Innisfree's most famous cushion is their Long Wear Cushion (matte), however I went with the Water Glow (dewy) version because I have dry skin!

I haven't seen many reviews for this product so I hope you enjoy :)

Back

Side 1

Side 2

Top

It comes in a paper packaging which feels like it's made from recycled paper.  On a design standpoint, I really like how they added icons on the side for some quick indications of some of the benefits of the product.  The only thing I found funny is that they printed their front cover sideways of everything else.

I got the colour #23 True Beige which is the darkest of the three available shades. One thing I noticed when I was researching this product was the colour swatches Innisfree gives you of each shade is totally misleading.  It looked like #23 would be really dark, tan, and yellow toned which was a huge worry for me since I wouldn't consider my skin to be all that dark, and I'm definitely more cool toned (yellow undertone but with a cool tone).  My friend who is much paler than I am, reassured me that the other two colors would be way too pale for me and to just go with the darkest shade and so I did.  More on that to come!

The compact itself it very sleek and simple.  It fits nicely in the palm of my hand and isn't too thick or heavy to travel with.  This will be perfect on the days I'm over at my boyfriend's house and do not want to bring a whole bottle of foundation + brushes.

The back has all the specifications: name, colour, manufacture date, and product amount.  You get 15g of product per cushion and they are also refillable so you don't have to keep buying new compacts.  It has a 12 month expiry life but I'm pretty sure you'll need to buy a new refill after 2-3 months if you use it daily.

The Water Glow cushion has SPF 50+ and PA+++ which I've found pretty standard for Korean BB/CC/foundation.

When you first open the compact, you'll find that it has a mirror and a sponge.  This might seem random but the first thing I noticed was how clear this mirror is.  I've never seen a mirror inside a makeup product so clear and sharp.  Even the mirror in my Naked 2 palette doesn't compare to this mirror and I find it super useful to use on the go.

The sponge is really the star of the show.  This is the key to getting the perfect application of foundation on your skin.  The texture of the sponge isn't like any other sponge I've ever felt and although I've never felt the Beauty Blender before, I have a feeling they are made of the same material.  It's soft, airy, and the pores on it are super tiny so it doesn't absorb too much product.

There's a plastic cover that keeps the cushion air tight and separates the sponge from the product to reduce bacteria.  If you're concerned about the sanitary factor of using a sponge, don't worry; you can wash these sponges.  There are a couple of helpful videos on Youtube showing you how to get them super clean and the best way I've found is using a bar soap.

When you first open the compact, there's a film that seals the product which you remove before using.  I guess this is to show that it hasn't been tampered with.

To get the product, you have to press down into the cushion.  As you can see, the product itself is much lighter than the cushion itself which is very misleading when people are trying to choose shades!  Always keep in mind that Korean girls have super pale skin so all their foundations are in the lighter side of the spectrum.

When swatched on my hand, you can see the difference between my cool skin tone versus the warmer tone of the foundation.  It also has a light texture.  It's not quite watery but it's not too thick like say Skin79's purple BB cream which has a gel-like texture.

After I tapped/blended it out with the sponge, it blended into my skin quite nicely.  I was surprised to find that it was a good colour match for my face.  Although it is slightly warm toned, it neutralized my skin tone well and gave a brightening affect.

The coverage for this foundation is light to medium.  It's definitely build-able and gets better the more layers you apply.  I usually do an overall application and go back with a second layer on areas that need higher covers like around the nose and on my dark circles.

Overall I am very impressed by this product and I've been using it every day since I got it.  I got mine on eBay for around $26 CAD while the cheapest refill I've seen goes for $17-18.  This has been a very pleasant introduction of cushion foundations and I'm eagered to try other brands!

The Face Shop Mango Seed Silk Moisturizing Facial Butter Review
Saturday, 3 January 2015 | 0 comments
Hi!

I'm back with another review for The Face Shop's mango seed line.  This is the final product I have from this line and it's my favourite one out of all of them.  It's the Mango Seed Silk Moisturizing Facial Butter.

First of all, what is a "facial butter"?  This is the first time I've ever heard of that term too.  Don't Asians just come up with the darnest names?  Well, this product got it's name because of it's texture.  This is a thick cream for your face that actually feels like butter.

Like the other packaging from this line, there is also a printed "toy" inside the box that you can cut out and build.  I haven't done this yet but I think it's cute and fun.  I feel like it adds a little extra to the product you paid for.  You get your skincare item AND a toy, haha.

This comes in a short wide container that feels like either glass or a really hard plastic.  It comes with a little spoon so you don't have to dig your fingers into the product, making it much more sanitary.  However, I wish they included something into the packaging to put this spoon in because I just sit it on top of the lid and it has no where to go.

Like I said, the consistency is like butter.  It smooths over your face so nicely and it just melts into your skin.  It's super thick and hydrating, so most people would not use this during the day time.  It's perfect for your night time skin care routine and you will wake up with really hydrated skin in the morning.  However, I have really dry skin and sometimes I like to use a very small amount, thinly all over my face.  The hydration lasts hours and hours into the day!

What's good about this entire line of skincare is that it's "free of 7 additives".  I guess that means they don't use 7 harmful chemicals that are usually found in skincare products.

I've read that some people's eyes started to get red after using this product on their face for whatever reason, but I didn't have this problem at all.  It has a lovely scent, but it doesn't irritate my dry, sensitive skin.

Overall, I love this product to bits!  I even bought a backup version.  The only real downside to this product is the price.  It's pretty expensive, costing around $35, I believe.  I can't remember if that was the exact price because I got it so long ago but it was somewhere around that range.

Rating: ★★★★★  5/5

I would dock it one point because of the price but I can't bring myself to do so.  It's such a good product, I need to give it a perfect score!

The Face Shop Mild Papaya Peeling Gel Review
Friday, 11 July 2014 | 0 comments
Hihi,

This year, I received The Face Shop Mild Papaya Peeling Gel as a birthday present and I've used it enough times to finally do a review on it.

So this is what the packaging looks like when you first get it.  There's some french on the back probably because I'm from Canada but whatever.  The back says:

A mild peeling product that contains natural enzymes from papaya removes the dead skin cells.
Directions: After drying face, pump the product 1~2 times and apply it on the entire face, avoiding the eye and mouth area.  Massage for 30 seconds and wash off when the dead skin cells come off.

This product is the same concept as the Cure Natural Aqua Peeling Gel.  The product is a clear gel consistency and when you rub it onto your face, you can start to see the dead skin cells balling up together which is what these white particles are.

The bottle says the strength is 2/5 while the moisturizing level (not sure if that's what it means, I don't read Korean) is 4/5.  It's meant for all skin types but I think it's especially good for sensitive skin because it's such a milk exfoliator.

After using this product, I can definitely tell that my skin feels more refreshed and smooth.  It really gets rid of that top dead layer of skin that you don't realize it's making you feel so gross until you remove it and remember how fresh skin feels like hahaha.  It's important to exfoliate your skin at least once or twice a week, especially if you wear a lot of make up, just so you don't get a massive build up and end up clogging pores and breaking out. a

They claim that this item is a 5 free formula (free from paraben, alcohol, animal ingredients, mineral oil, artificial coloring).

Rating: ★★★☆☆  3/5

I'm only giving this a 3/5 because I'm the type of person that loves a really intense exfoliator.  This one gets the job done but I personally don't like how it's so mild.  The scent is alright, it's sort of a fruity scent but if scents bother you, this might be a problem for you.  I recommend this for anyone that wants a gentle exfoliation for their sensitive skin.

The Face Shop Floral Water Mist Review
Sunday, 8 June 2014 | 0 comments
Hihi,

This is going to be a quick review on The Face Shop's Floral Water Mist.  I got this as one of my birthday presents this year.  There's not much to say about it, so this is going to be short and simple!

So this product comes in a small spray can with 0.50mL of product.  It's a water mist that is supposed to brighten your skin and contains SPF 8.  I've never heard of anything with such a low SPF and I really wonder if that does anything for the skin.  I'm currently using this in the winter time so maybe this is alright (my BB cream does most of the SPF work anyway), but I'd imagine that you'd need tons more during the summer.

The instructions tells you to not spray directly to your face, but instead, spray onto your hands and then apply to the face.  I'm a little bummed that you can't spray directly on the face because I'd imagine that would feel very refreshing.  When applied to the face, it leaves the skin feeling a little more fresh and I find it is a good "base" for your foundation or BB cream.  I use it almost like a primer, although I'm not sure if it does much for your makeup.  As for the brightening aspect, I haven't used it long enough to see a difference so I'm not sure if it actually brightens the skin.

Overall, I would say this product isn't a "must have" item.  It's more of a luxury product that's kinda fun to use.  It has a nice floral scent but if you're skin is really sensitive and cannot take scents, I'd stay away from things like this.

The Face Shop Face It Styling Auto Gel Liner (01 Edgy Black) Review
Tuesday, 27 May 2014 | 0 comments
Hey cuties,

While buying my toner, The Face Shop was having a buy one get your second item 50% off, so I picked up this gel pencil liner because my eyeliner was running low.  At the time, I didn't really know anything about this product and I simply stumbled upon it when I was trying to look for a second item to buy.  I literally went around the whole store thinking "what else should I get?" because my original intention was to just go in there to buy my toner and get out, however, the sale suckered me in.  When I saw the eyeliner section, I instantly remembered that I needed a new one and so I saw this and thought I would give it a try.  This is The Face Shop's Face It Styling Auto Gel Liner in 01 Edgy Black.

Here's what it says on the back:
 A soft gel liner in a pencil! A super-easy-to-use pencil-type gel liner!
Directions: Dot along the last line as if filling in gaps between lashes.  Due to its soft & creamy texture, keep the lead short about 2mm to avoid any breakage when using.  To sharpen the eyeliner, twist up the built-in sharpener at the end of the pencil.  Use waterproof make-up remover to cleanse.

This liner is suppose to be a twist up type pencil, so you don't have to sharpen it if you don't want to.  It does, however, come with a built in sharpener at the end of the pencil.  You can simple pull it out of the bottom end and you'll find the sharpener hidden inside.  Sharpen it if you need a pointier end to create thin lines or a sharp wing.

Like the name suggests, it's a "gel liner" in pencil form, so you would expect the finish and quality of gel liners.  For me, I personally love gel liners as oppose to regular kohl or pencil liners (but liquid is still my #1 favourite).  I find that gel liners set nicely, won't smudge or budge, and just lasts very long on my lids.  Although, I also find it annoying that I have to use a brush with it and wash that brush every time I use it.  But guess what?  This liner's formula is just like a gel liner!  It's so wonderful.  I swatched it on my hand, let it set for a minute or two, then tried to smudge it with my finger.  No matter now hard I rubbed, it did NOT smudge.  Not one bit.  I would take a before and after picture but it would literally look the exact same, so that is pointless.  I would say if you are wearing this liner and you rubbed your eyes because you forgot you had makeup on (come on, that has happened to all of us once before), I would bet that your liner would be perfectly fine.  I haven't tested out that theory yet, but from the test on my hand, that looks like it would be a very plausible situation.

The formula is very smooth, just like a gel liner.  This is great because it means that it will not tug on your eyelids when you are applying it.  On the left is one stroke, and on the right is several strokes.  You can see that even with one stroke, you get a very dark and pigmented colour.  Going over it again will leave you with an intense black.

Another claim that they make is that it is waterproof.  I rarely have problems with my liner smudging and running down my face, so to no surprise, this hasn't given me any problems either.  Maybe it's because of my eye shape, or due to the fact that my eyelids aren't oily and watery.  However, I did try to rub this liner off my hand under running water and it didn't even come off.  I had to use hand soap and even then, I found myself rubbing for quite a while before it started to come off.  So I would say, yes, this is quite waterproof.

This liner is being sold in The Face Shop stores for $12, but with my 50% off, I got it for $6.  I think even without the sale, it's a pretty decent price.  Compared to something like Urban Decay's liners, it's literally half the price, but still does a pretty damn good job.

One thing that I will mention is that if you use it to tight line your eyes, it may dry your eyes out a little bit.  I'm not sure if this is just because I tend to have dry eyes or what, but I've noticed that my upper waterline felt very dry after tight lining with this.  On my bottom waterline, it feels fine.  I would also like to mention that on the waterline, it will fade away in a couple of hours, as do most liners (even gel liners, I find)

Rating: ★★★★☆  4.5/5  (Don't laugh, they don't actually have a half star symbol so...)

I would have given this a 5/5 but I docked it half a point because of the fact that it did dry out my waterline.  I'm going to continue to use it and see if the problem persists.  Has anyone else had a problem with that?  I may just have really dry eyes.

Have this liner?  Tried it?  Love or hate it?  Tell me what you think in the comments!

Update: The Face Shop Mango Seed Silk Moisturizing Toner and Lotion
Tuesday, 29 April 2014 | 0 comments
Hi you!

If you remember way back in November, I did a mini review on some samples I got of The Face Shop Mango Seed Silk Moisturizing Toner and Lotion.  Well, a month later, I actually went and got the full sized version.

This is what the box for the lotion looks like.  Inside each box from this line is a printed "toy" that you can cut out and assemble together.  I haven't done that yet but I think I will do that when I get bored with nothing to do.

The lotion comes in a glass bottle with a pump that has a clear cap to go with it.  There's 125mL in the bottle and I find that one pump is enough for my whole face.  The texture is thin, perfect for day time use.

I went and bought the toner a week or so after because I realized I liked it more than I thought.  Originally I figured I didn't need the toner because I don't usually use toners anyway, but this toner is different from the rest.  It really does add that extra hydration that my skin loves.

As you can see, the product separates, so you have to shake it up really good before using.  It also comes in a glass jar with a pump and a cap.  The toner, however, has 145mL of product.  I assume that is because this is more liquid than the lotion which means you will end up using more.  I use about one and a half pumps of the toner, which conveniently makes both products equal in amount so I won't run out of one product before the other.

One thing that I noticed about the toner and the bottle is that when you shake it up and open the bottle to look at the straw, the product trapped in the straw doesn't actually mix.  Therefore, if you want an even mixture, you'd have to pump the remaining product in the straw, shake, then re-pump to get a good mixture.  This gets rather annoying and I wish they had thought about this problem while creating the packaging for this toner.

Other than that, my opinion for these products don't change at all.  I still love this line and would give it a 5 out of 5.  Look out for my review on the facial butter from the same time!
